Project Benefits
The main target of the MODURBAN project is to design, develop and test an innovative and open common core system architecture and its key interfaces (this covers Command Control, energy saving and access subsystems), paving the way for the next generations of urban-guided public transport systems.
This approach will be applied to both new lines as well as the renewal and extension of existing lines and will encourage cost effective migration from driver to driverless operation. This integrated approach will avoid the risk of new rolling stock and subsystems being built from unproven prototype sub-assemblies as illustrated by the following scheme:

In addition to the obvious cost advantages derived from longer production runs of modular components (plug-and-play), sub-suppliers will be able to compete at the performance level, giving rise to increased reliability and speeding the entry of new fleets into service. MODURBAN will specifically increase the percentage of component reusability into new series owing to standard interfacing currently almost non-existent to a level of around 50%-60%. Technical innovation can be encouraged since sub-suppliers can compete actively between well-defined interface and input/output specifications.
